The Australian Schools Rugby League team have returned from their successful tour to New Zealand undefeated. The Aussies played New Zealand Schools in two Test matches in Rotorua and Auckland during the September school holidays.
The first Test in Rotorua was played in trying conditions with the Aussies getting home in a tight encounter,26-18. After controlling the match in the early periods, the Aussies held out their Kiwi counterparts as they applied pressure through a series of repeat sets.
Australian Schoolboys Coach, Tony Adam, told NZRL.co.nz: “It was an extremely physical contest where our boys were bombarded by a strong New Zealand attack – we also managed to adapt well to the wet conditions.
“Our side did well to keep turning up even when the Kiwi boys came at them with seven repeat sets.”
The second Test was a different story with the Aussies running away with the match with a convincing 40-8 win over the Kiwis. In perfect conditions at The Trust Arena in Auckland, the Aussies were simply too good. Tanah Boyd was instrumental in the win and awarded Player of the Test with Campbell Graham selected best back and James Roumanos awarded best forward.
The player of the tour award went to David Fifita and with 2016 Australian Schools representative Nick Cotric recently winning NRL Rookie of the Year for his impressive breakout season with the Raiders, don’t be surprised to see some of these faces filtering into NRL teams in the next few seasons.
Estilo would like to congratulate all involved for their achievement and a special mention to James Look who co-ordinated the tour with Estilo.
